Redback Exhaust Systems Explained: What a Cat-Back Upgrade Actually Changes

If you've spent any time in Aussie 4x4 forums or around a servo bowser with other tourers, you've heard someone talk about "throwing a cat-back on it." A Redback cat-back exhaust upgrade is one of the most popular first mods for diesel utes and wagons, and for good reason — it's a bolt-on change that touches everything from turbo response to the note your rig makes at idle. But what does it actually change under the bonnet, and what stays the same? Here's a proper breakdown of what a Redback exhaust upgrade does, and doesn't do, for your 4x4.

What "Cat-Back" Actually Means

The term gets thrown around loosely, but on a modern diesel 4x4 it's more accurate to talk about a DPF-back or turbo-back system, depending on the vehicle. Redback's Extreme Duty range is engineered to bolt in after the factory diesel particulate filter (DPF) and, where fitted, the catalytic converter — replacing the factory mid-pipe, resonator and muffler with a mandrel-bent 3-inch system. The factory emissions equipment stays in place. What changes is everything downstream of it: fewer bends, smoother mandrel-bent pipework, and a muffler design that flows more freely than the factory unit.

Older non-DPF vehicles, like early 78 and 79 Series LandCruisers, use a turbo-back system instead, which replaces pipework from the turbo outlet rearward and can include a high-flow catalytic converter option.

The Three Sound Options, Explained

Every Redback Extreme Duty kit is available in three configurations, and this is where a lot of the confusion comes from when people say "I want it loud" or "I don't want to upset the neighbours":

  • Pipe Only (Loud) — no muffler in the system, just the mandrel-bent pipework. This is the most aggressive option and delivers the least restriction.
  • Resonator (Medium) — a mid-size muffler that tones things down from Pipe Only while still giving a noticeably deeper note than stock.
  • Large Muffler (Quiet) — the closest to factory-level quietness, aimed at owners who want the flow benefits without the drone on a long highway tow.

None of these options change the emissions componentry — they only change what happens to exhaust gas and sound after it leaves the DPF or turbo.

What Actually Changes: Turbo Response, EGTs and Torque

The real-world benefit of a Redback upgrade isn't really about outright horsepower — diesel 4x4s aren't chasing big power numbers from an exhaust alone. What a mandrel-bent, larger-diameter system does is reduce backpressure. Less backpressure means the turbo doesn't have to work as hard to push exhaust gas out, which shows up as:

  • Sharper turbo response and reduced lag, particularly noticeable when towing or climbing
  • Lower exhaust gas temperatures (EGTs), since gas exits the system more efficiently
  • A measurable torque improvement in the low-to-mid rev range where diesels do most of their work

Owners who tow regularly tend to notice the EGT benefit most, since lower EGTs mean the engine is running cooler under load — useful information if you're already running a gauge.

Redback Extreme Duty for the Ford Ranger

The Ford Ranger 3.2L is one of the most common fitments we send out, and it's a good example of the DPF-back setup in action. The kit bolts in after the factory DPF and is available in all three sound configurations.

Redback Extreme Duty for the Mitsubishi Triton

The Triton MQ/MR platform gets the same 3-inch DPF-back treatment, with the same three muffler options depending on how quiet you want the cabin on a long haul.

Redback Extreme Duty for the Toyota LandCruiser 79 Series

The 79 Series gets a turbo-back system with the option of a factory-equivalent catalytic converter or a cat-delete pipe, depending on your state's compliance requirements and whether you're running the vehicle on public roads.

Redback also covers the 78 Series Troop Carrier, 76 Series Wagon, 200 Series, Prado 150, Fortuner, Hilux, Nissan Patrol Y62, Navara NP300, Isuzu D-MAX and more — check our Exhaust & Mufflers collection for the full fitment range.

Materials and Build Quality

Redback's Extreme Duty range is built from mandrel-bent tube with 10mm-thick flange plates, so bends stay smooth and consistent rather than crimped, which keeps flow efficient right through the system. Every Redback 4x4 exhaust carries a 5-year manufacturer's warranty, extendable to 10 years by registering your purchase directly with Redback. You can read the full terms on the official Redback warranty page.

What Doesn't Change

It's worth being clear on this: a DPF-back or turbo-back system doesn't touch your vehicle's emissions control equipment, and it isn't a substitute for a tune or other performance modifications. It also won't turn a diesel ute into something it isn't — the gains are real but incremental, focused on efficiency and driveability rather than a dramatic power jump. If you're planning any exhaust modification, it pays to check your state's compliance rules, particularly around catalytic converter removal, before you fit a cat-delete option.

Where to Start

For most owners, the sensible starting point is deciding how loud you actually want the vehicle day-to-day — towing, touring, or daily driving all point toward different muffler choices. From there it's a matter of matching the kit to your exact model and build date, since fitments vary between series and engine variants.
